    1978 CB400T turn signals not blinking

    Hi all,
    Searched the forum for reference to this with no luck but I'm sure I'm not the first one to see this. Turned the key on the original relay, bulbs and wiring (with a few patches around the problem areas) and the lights seem to operate with the engine off and a new battery installed. The turn signals are not blinking however and I suspect the signal relay. At one point however, after the power had been on for a while the signals seemed to blink......slooooowwly. I assumed the relay either worked as intentioned or didn't work at all. Is it possible to have a partially operating relay? Also, what type of relay would replace this 40 year old unit? (Bike shop had no clue).

    Charge your BATTERY......
    Your relay is likely fine, but if not, a 12V two terminal flasher from the auto-parts store will work.......

    Did you charge the new battery before installing it? You gotta charge it first, usually 12-24 hours depending on the output of your charger. The stock flasher works using resistance heating, if the voltage is low its not gonna work.

    If your battery is fully charged (13.6 volts is fully charged) and its still not working, any 2-plug flasher will work. I replaced my flasher with a 6$ one from Princess Auto.


    Correction: 13.2 Volts is freshly charged/just off the charger.....12.6 to 12.7V is typically fully charged on a "resting" battery...

    Thanks for the replies folks. The new battery was fully charged before install. I'll try a new relay next and post my results.

    Started the bike finally (after 25+ years under a tarp) and signals started flashing. I guess the relay needed a little extra power through those old cables to activate. Still kind of amazing to me that it works after 41 years. Thanks for the tips folks!
