CL360 Front Axle and Wheel Bearing Retainers

    Hi all,

I've got a two part question for you in my quest to replace the front and rear wheel bearings.

    1. The front axle nut is conventional thread, correct? (lefty loosey) I've been struggling getting my front axle apart. I'm going to try to put it in a vice with a screwdriver through the axle rod to keep the axle from rotating and a 22mm socket and 2' breaker bar on the nut.

    2. What is the thread on the front and rear wheel bearing retainers? Conventional, or reverse thread?

I know this has been asked before, so I appreciate your patience.

    Thanks!

The axle nut is indeed regular thread. I’ve used the vice trick before, as well as a pipe wrench to get stubborn axle nuts loose.

Edit: to clarify, are you just using the vice to hold the wheel upright? You can actually turn the wheel sideways and clamp the smooth end in the vice, then crank on the nut. Or hold the wheel upright and use a pipe wrench on the smooth end, and socket on the nut. Some heat will help.

middletons, turning the wheel sideways sounds like an even better idea. Heading out to fight the good fight with socket, cheater bar, and heat. Updates to follow.

Sorry for the delay... got the front axle apart. I was lost when people said use a 22mm socket because my CL has an early style axle nut that only has two flats and a hole, not a hex. So solution was what I should've done from the start, adjustable wrench, cheater bar, and heat.

I'm thinking the style axle nut I have is an early model thing.
