Well, heck. A no go after co-workers took a stab at getting the points/timing set last night. When he pulled the points on the left side he noticed the L bracket holding the top portion of the points was not a right angle causing the points to be gapped further. But he also noticed the advanced unit had been modified (or perhaps repaired) resulting in what he thinks might not be the proper position (the cutout that is used to line up the advance unit has been modified resulting in a sloppy fit). At his urging I found another set on-line that look to be in pretty good shape - at least the base is.

Received my replacement spark advance unit. Did not have much time to mess with it, but it definitely has a tighter fit. My quick install and test also showed it working better than any efforts previously. Hope to go work on it this evening or tomorrow.

Well, a happy camper. Steve and I got it running today. Appears replacing the butchered spark advance unit was the final issue to overcome. However, I will probably be replacing the points plate. Top screw for the left points appears not to be tightening snug. Good screw.
Got the air filters installed and hooked the carbs up to the tank without installing it and was able to get idle adjusted. Initially the left carb was spitting some, but that went away.
Banner weekend. Got to hear the engine run and found a .32 caliber walther ppk/s in blue that was in great shape. Been looking for one for some time. Have the stainless interarms version. But wanted a blued one.
So letting engine cool down and then continue reassembling the bike.
So cool to hear it run.

Dreadnought hope I don't need them, but offer is appreciated.
Installed tank and started her up. Let it run and clear the fuel from the carburetors.
My concern about top end getting oil was alleviated. Oil is coming out of check hole.
Need to adjust clutch. Could have tried the bike out, but clutch wasn't releasing properly. That CL exhaust is going to be a pain doing that chore.

It has been so long since reassembling the engine and getting it running and then the bike rolling, that I had forgot to take into consideration break in on the engine. At this point I would guess the engine has ran a total of an hour. Any suggestions for moving forward. When the engine did initially start, it did go up to about 3500 rpm before I got the idle adjusted. It has been up to nearly 5K since for short bursts.

Rode the bike a bit more today in the neighborhood. Plowed into a curb doing a U. That was unimpressive to anyone watching.
Did hear something like a spit or the like on left carb, but don't recall if I was accelerating or not.
Someone in another forum was curious if perhaps my hard acceleration issue might not be jetting or float level. I just rebuilt my carbs using the jets that came with the Common Motor rebuild kit prior to the engine rebuild.
