Smile Any difference in a 1970 CB175 gas tank and the CL175?

    Hi,

I've been bitten by the nostalgia bug, so I've bought a project 1970 cl175. The gas tank is rusted through in a couple places and I don't think it's probably worth trying to fix. But I don't know a lot about that, I just know it had a lot of rust in there and the gas cap would hardly come off. I had to use an oil wrench.

I happened to be at an auto-body shop and mentioned it to the guy there and showed him a picture asking if he could fix it. He said get a new one...

So, my problem is when I search on eBay there are not a lot of 1970 tanks to start with. Some are as bad as mine I think, and NOS are more than I want to pay.

I have even been considering buying a new aftermarket tank, but the one I found says not for CL on the fitment page, but it will work for the CB.

If I find a CB175 tank on eBay will it work on my CL?

I read the archived posts about using other years and possibly using other years seats to make it look okay. I think that may be an option too.

I just don't want to spend money for a tank and learn it won't fit...

    Thanks in advance

I have a 72 CL175 tank that's available. Blue. Surface rust on inside but not bad. No dents and underside is not rusted. Excellent candidate for rustoration or restoration. Fair price. I'm moving and don't want to lug with me if possible. PM me or call 561-440-0241 David. [email protected]

The CB175 tank will fit the CL175, same frame on both bikes. A CB174 K5 or earlier tank is the same length as the CL tank, just a slightly different shape, the CB175 K6/K7 tank is longer.

However, you really need the matching seat for the K4/K5 tank, and definitely for the later tank. In fact, forget about the later tank and seat, as you also need need the later frame for the side mounted seat hinges, although the tank fits either frame.

Here's my CB175 K4 fitted with a CL tank, and with the correct tank. Notice how the CB seat doesn't quite match up to the CL tank, I imagine the reverse would also be true.

And this is CL tank ( ignore the faux CB175 colour scheme ) on a K7 frame with a CB175 K6 seat.

Thank you for the information Richard, it helps me a ton!!! And thanks for taking the time to post the pictures along with the explanation.

And Dball, thanks for the offer - I may end up getting a hold of you if I can't get a closer fit.

Thanks again guys! Very much appreciate it!
