Keep struggling with my engine rebuild project, so decided to see what the exhaust system I bought a while back would look like on the bike. Needs clean up, but another thing to keep me from walking away from this bike for a while.
Of course tomorrow's root canal might put a damper on my enthusiasm.

Yeah. Putting exhaust on a bike that makes no noise.

Figured out more about mounting the CL exhaust this evening. That was cool. Think I ordered too many parts. Methinks one bracket I have is for later generation.

The chrome one is the bracket, I bought but does not seem applicable in my application.
However, I figured out how the two black brackets wrap around the frame and attach to my bracket on my exhaust system. So that is what I am happy about. I am thinking there should be a spacer between the back muffler attachment and the bracket attached to my shock.
EDIT: Actually, according to the drawings that bigger bracket is part of my install, just not clear where it goes (it has a clamp component, that I also have).

Your muffler already has the correct bracket on the back of it that attaches to the split frame clamp you pictured in your post. That bracket pictured in the upper left corner of your post is the one used on the early '68 CL exhaust - you don't need it. If you have to space the upper muffler mount out that far from the top shock bolt for side cover clearance, then you'll have to add a spacer onto the back muffler mount, too. Stock, they had no spacers, so as we discussed before, your pipes must be bent.

The muffler should fit closely to the shock, like this...

    Thanks 83XLX.
It was a very tight squeeze to get the spacer in there and I referred to a drawing that showed where that spacer did go, so that was a mistake.
I am planning to pull it snug without the spacer moving forward.
Thanks for the information. I have an early CL, but I am guessing the exhaust was from a later CL hence the different bracket.
Can I have your chain guard (:
    And your exhaust (:

Those '68-'69 chrome chain guards are pretty hard to find in good condition. The rear mount was prone to breaking off. Mine is intact, but has some battery acid burn on it and a crack near the front mount. I have a later model black one I'd let go cheap if you decide to give up on finding an early chrome one.

This is not a restore. I just like chain guards, more so with chains then belts. I could imagine those mounting tabs not standing up well with the shake rattle and roll. let me know what you want for the black one.
Of course after next week, I might be in a position where no more money can be spent on this project. Employer has initiated voluntary layoffs. If not enough accept, their offer (one month pay), then we assume forced reduction in force will follow. Been with the company twenty years managing and supporting the business systems, etc. But may be unemployed soon.
