I took the head off and this is what I found....

I think these are the 3 parts you are referring to......

The right side appears to still be fine

But the left definitely looks like it needs to be replaced. I assume I have to replace the whole piece?

And the camshaft looks pretty bad

So it looks like I'm on the hunt for parts. While I have everything apart is there anything else I should be doing in the head? clean the valves with seafoam?

Yes, those are exactly the parts I mentioned.... I have a similarly damaged set from one of the vertical engines I aquired..., seems this is a problem area on the 175's......
I intend to enlarge the passages to allow more oil flow to the left side on mine, including the feed holes in the cam and journals on the left, and deepening the journal spiral grooving.....
You may want to take off the right side case cover and check your oil pump, the centrifugal filter, and the passages leading to the top end as well....
Obtain a new head gasket and journal gaskets and the "point" seal for your rebuild....Checking/cleaning the valves and head internals can't hurt.....

Replaced the points and had it running with the new camshaft and bearing, but ran into the same lubrication problem. Pulled the engine back out and took the head off to find that I'm getting oil everywhere except the spot where the cam goes into the left bearing. Any ideas why that particular area would remain dry?

I think my cam and bearing are in good enough shape to reassemble, but I need to know how to get oil to it to prevent the same problem.

Thanks,

Scott

Here is the oil flow diagram from the Honda sloper manual:

I'll double check against my physical sloper engine parts tomorrow.....and verbally discribe the exact points to check for flow......

Verified!....The oil travels up the left rear stud passage and through a small hole and channel in the journal (aluminum cam bearing block) to the bearing surface...IF the gasket hole isn't aligned or the stud passages clear, you won't get oil..... There IS a small orifice on the cases where the base gasket goes....Wouldn't take much to clog it there....
