nice bike! I have noticed that a lot of 450 have painted upper forks and headlight ears, mine (k7) are chrome. Would you happen to know if this is factory?

On the K3-4 the headlight, fork ears, tank and side covers are the same color. On the K5-7 the headlight is black, the fork ears are chrome and the tank and side covers are the same color.

With regard the squeaking brakes, I aiways smear copper grease on back of pads, normally stops it.

After riding about 45 minutes the front brakes feel pretty good although towards the end they've developed a pretty loud squeal when first applying the brakes. That's great! Now it can join my '76 GL1000 whose rear brake squeals so loud I'm embarrassed to ride it.

Have you tried applying brake grease? I found a guy on another site who did this...

"I cleaned out the old grease from between the back of the pad and the caliper face, replenishing it with a fresh coat of brake caliper lube that I picked up from Auto Zone. When you do this, be careful not to get the grease on the brake pad face."

Or go here to see a better size of the pic..

Hondas are famous for squeeling brakes. My 81 GL is so quiet the only thing you hear going down the highway are the brake disks squeeling. The cause is dirty disks. Put the bike on the center stand and lift the front wheel. Use a clean cloth with brake cleaner on it. Spin the tire and wipe both sides of the disk. Turn it in both directions. If this doesn't do it pull the caliper and clean the pads. Also, make sure the STOCK Honda backup springs are installed on the pads. Once there are a few miles on the brakes it should get more miles between cleaniing. I believe the prime culprit is brake dust.

What the heck is a "STOCK Honda backup springs are installed on the pads"????

There isn't any such thing on any disc brake 450 that I've ever known.. There's only a plastic washer behind one of the pads and that's not a spring.

I wonder if modern day discs would help things along...or maybe just drilling the discs :?:

Sorry, Confused with my GL. Point is: everything needs to be very clean, caliper, pads (both sides), piston, disc, and the caliper free to float.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I've cleaned the discs and used lots of brake grease on the backing plate. I'm going to try and use some 1000 grit wet/dry on the discs next and if that doesn't fix it I'll try some new pads.

I'm having the same problem on the rear brake of my '76 GL1000 so which ever one I fix first will be the winner. :)
